The Rotary Club of Ipswich East was formed in 1971 as a daughter club to the Rotary Club of Ipswich which was founded in 1923. The Club has approximately 62 members and meets every Tuesday lunchtime at the Greshams Sports and Social Club, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich (an evening meeting is held on any 5th Tuesday in a month)

Every June, by taking part in the Orwell Walk, ordinary people raise thousands of pounds for charities of all descriptions. Some are big national charities like Save the Children, others are needy causes close to home like scout troops and junior football clubs. The next walk takes place on June 27th 2010. | |

Rotary is a worldwide organisation which was founded in Chicago, USA in 1905. Club membership is by invitation and is made up of suitably qualified business people.
Clubs exist to offer fellowship between business people and to serve the local community. Its motto is ‘Service above self’. |

The History of the Orwell Walk |

The first Orwell Walk was held in 1977. In that year, 223 walkers took part in the event. The event has grown in the intervening years to such an extent that for 2010, approximately 2000 people are expected to participate. The Walk still follows much the same route along the River Orwell to Felixstowe, although there are occasionally route changes when farming, land usage or tidal variations dictate. Many of the walkers are old hands at the game, some having completed 20 walks or more. In the main the walkers are local to Suffolk in particular and East Anglia in general. There is one gentleman however who visits regularly from Dorset specifically to raise funds for his favourite charity. |

The Walk is open to anyone who would like to raise funds for any charitable cause. This could be anything from an international charity to a local scout troop. A condition of entry to the Walk is that 25% of the money raised is paid to the Rotary Club of Ipswich East (minimum £10), which places the proceeds in its benevolent fund. This is used to assist charities, especially local ones. |
